What is a liquid-cooled battery energy storage system (BESS)?

High-power battery energy storage systems (BESS) are often equipped with liquid-cooling systems to remove the heat generated by the batteries during operation. This tutorial demonstrates how to define and solve a high-fidelity model of a liquid-cooled BESS pack which consists of 8 battery modules, each consisting of 56 cells (14S4p).

How does a liquid cooled thermal management system work?

Therefore, in the liquid-cooled thermal management system model, the temperature control effect that can be achieved only by increasing the coolant flow rate is limited, and the energy utilization efficiency will also decrease rapidly with the increasing flow rate.

Can liquid cooling reduce temperature homogeneity of power battery module?

Based on this, Wei et al. designed a variable-temperature liquid cooling to modify the temperature homogeneity of power battery module at high temperature conditions. Results revealed that the maximum temperature difference of battery pack is reduced by 36.1 % at the initial stage of discharge.

How does liquid cooling work?

Liquid cooling uses a coolant as a medium for convective heat transfer to achieve heat dissipation and cooling of the battery pack through direct or indirect contact [ 21 ]. Currently, the related research focuses on the shape of liquid cooling channels, the optimization of the cooling structures, and the selection of the coolant materials [ 22 ].

Does liquid-cooling reduce the temperature rise of battery modules?

Under the conditions set for this simulation, it can be seen that the liquid-cooling system can reduce the temperature rise of the battery modules by 1.6 K and 0.8 K at the end of charging and discharging processes, respectively. Fig. 15.

What is the temperature difference between battery modules?

The temperature field distribution of different modules is basically the same, and the temperature consistency between the battery modules is good. For no liquid cooling, from the initial temperature, the maximum temperature rise of the modules is 3.6 K at the end of the charging process and 3 K at the end of discharging process.
