Measuring the insulation resistance of a capacitor involves assessing the dielectric material’s resistance to leakage current. This resistance is intrinsic to the dielectric material itself.
Low capacitance capacitors have low leakage current; thus, a low current ammeter can measure the current accurately. If the leakage current is high, the ammeter will not able to measure accurately due to the noise and unstability of the charged capacitor. Therefore, the second method should be used for higher capacitance capacitors*2.
To measure the internal resistance accurate the channel 2 probe must be placed as close as possible at the capacitor. The resistor Rs must have approximately the same value as the impedance of the capacitor. De first method describes the measurement of small capacitors whereof the series resistance is negligible. Fig. 5: Mathematical model.
In this example we'll consider a ceramic capacitor of 2.2uf (2.2x10-6 farads) with a typical minimum insulation resistance of 2GW. If a capacitor is tested at 200V and measures a dielectric leakage current of 10nA the insulation resistance must be 20GW.
If a capacitor is tested at 200V and measures a dielectric leakage current of 10nA the insulation resistance must be 20GW. For 10nA the instrument would be on the 100nA full-scale range with a feedback resistor of 20MW. In this case the gain of the detector is 20MW/20GW, or .001. The output voltage would then be [(.001) · (200V)], or 200mV.
The second method describes a measurement that is suitable for measuring on larger capacities and can also determine the internal series resistance (ESR). This method is thus mainly suitable for measuring on electrolytic capacitors. Figure 8 shows the mathematical model with the associated vector diagram in figure 9.
