The UK needs to rapidly increase investment in domestic battery production to help keep up the predicted increase in demand for electric vehicles (EVs) and full-scale grid storage, according to a report from the Faraday Institution.
The Faraday Institution, for example, has projected that the UK will need 100GWh of battery manufacturing capacity by 2030 to satisfy demand for batteries from the UK’s automotive industry and other sectors. 28 That demand is due to increase to 200GWh by 2040.
Automotive manufacturing, especially for electric cars and vans, is expected to make up the majority of demand for batteries. By 2030, for example, the UK’s automotive industry will need 90GWh of battery manufacturing capacity to supply electric vehicles built in this country.
Demand for EV battery manufacturing capacity in the UK is expected to be around 100 GWh per annum in 2030 29 (and nearly 200 GWh in 2040) with four-fifths arising from the manufacture of cars and light commercial vehicles (Faraday 2022a; BEIS 2023).
At present, 47% of the projected demand for UK batteries to 2030 remains unaddressed by existing gigafactory development plans. Furthermore, 71% of the demand projected to 2040 has yet to be met.
Satisfying demand from the UK’s automotive industry and other sectors will require 100GWh of battery manufacturing capacity by 2030. That requirement will increase to 200GWh by 2040. The UK, however, currently has only one gigafactory, which has less than 2GWh of capacity. It is run by Envision AESC near Nissan’s plant in Sunderland.
