In thermo-mechanical energy storage systems like compressed air energy storage (CAES), energy is stored as compressed air in a reservoir during off-peak periods, while it is used on demand during peak periods to generate power with a turbo-generator system.
Appendix B presents an overview of the theoretical background on compressed air energy storage. Most compressed air energy storage systems addressed in literature are large-scale systems of above 100 MW which most of the time use depleted mines as the cavity to store the high pressure fluid.
In diabatic compressed air energy storage systems, off-peak electricity is transformed into energy potential for compressed air, and kept in a cavern, but given out when demand is high.
