The new technology is based on an onboard energy storage system (OBESS), with scalable battery capacity. Tramways use DC instead of AC because, if we used low Voltage AC, we wouldn't need transformers but each tram would require a rectifier. DC is used for tramways. AC does have lower transmission losses, but when it comes to pylon distribution, we use AC as it's easier to step up and down.
