Solid-state batteries (SSBs), characterized by their use of solid electrolytes (SEs) instead of volatile/flammable liquids (Figure 1), could revolutionize the EV landscape. SSBs offer significantly enhanced energy densities if they utilize high-specific-capacity electrodes, including Li metal or alloys.
The technology of the solid-state batteries that includes the advancements in the materials of anodes gives the promises for enabling the next generations of energy storage device solutions with hopes of higher efficiency as well as faster charging rates.
As a result, solid-state batteries will last longer than conventional batteries and can be charged more quickly. Solid-state battery technology has a smaller carbon footprint than lithium-ion technology because of all this lightweight material and safety, which means our environment is better protected.
In China, all-solid-state batteries, especially sulfide-based ones, with an energy density of 400 Watt-hour per kilogram are finding favor now. Wh/kg is a reference unit that indicates the density of energy contained or storable in a body. All-solid-state batteries represent a disruptive EV technology, they said.
