There are several battery hen rescue charities in the UK through which you can adopt ex-battery hens. The largest is the British Hen Welfare Trust (BHWT), which rescues some 60,000 hens a year, and have rehomed their 250,000th ex-commercial hen.
Organisations such as The British Hen Welfare Trust (BHWT) and Little Hen Rescue can not only provide you with lots of helpful tips and advice on taking on ex-battery hens, but they will also be able to pair you up with some feathery friends.
Hang a feeder inside the chicken house, near your ex-battery hens to start with so they can find their food without going too far. Battery hens are fed layers crumble, not layers pellets. In time, you can slowly change their diet to layers pellets if you wish, but wait until they have settled in first.
Ex-commercial hens are often referred to as ex-battery hens, although the UK banned battery cages and introduced larger, enriched colony cages in 2012. These days, organisations rehoming battery hens can rescue them from various farming systems, including barn, free-range and colony cage systems.
