According to findings by Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF), the price of lithium-ion batteries (LIB packs) was $273 per kWh in 2016. The price is forecasted to drop to $162 per kWh in 2017 and $74 per kWh in 2030. (Curry, 2017)
According to BloombergNEF, the average lithium-ion battery costs $151 per kilowatt-hour (kWh). In 2021, the average per kWh cost was $141.
The global market for lithium-ion battery recycling is expected to reach 35 billion U.S. dollars by 2031. This figure compares to around six billion U.S. dollars in 2022. Lithium-ion batteries are one of the most efficient energy storage devices worldwide. Over recent years, high-scale production and capital investment into the battery production process made lithium-ion battery packs cheaper and more efficient.
The industry continues to switch to the low-cost cathode chemistry known as lithium iron phosphate (LFP). These packs and cells had the lowest global weighted-average prices, at $130/kWh and $95/kWh, respectively. This is the first year that BNEF’s analysis found LFP average cell prices falling below $100/kWh.
For battery electric vehicle (BEV) packs, prices were $128/kWh on a volume-weighted average basis in 2023. At the cell level, average prices for BEVs were just $89/kWh. This indicates that on average, cells account for 78% of the total pack price. Over the last four years, the cell-to-pack cost ratio has risen from the traditional 70:30 split.
