The new standards underpin innovation and enable consistent practices in the production of batteries and the development of battery technology with guidance on health, safety and environmental considerations in battery manufacturing and use.
These include performance and durability requirements for industrial batteries, electric vehicle (EV) batteries, and light means of transport (LMT) batteries; safety standards for stationary battery energy storage systems (SBESS); and information requirements on SOH and expected lifetime.
All parts are not applicable for all batteries. Instead, the regulation defines five battery categories depending on how the battery is used. Some requirements are only applicable for some battery categories. Requirements associated with a new CE conformity assessment of batteries are introduced in the Regulation.
Performance and Durability Requirements (Article 10) Article 10 of the regulation mandates that from 18 August 2024, rechargeable industrial batteries with a capacity exceeding 2 kWh, LMT batteries, and EV batteries must be accompanied by detailed technical documentation.
It specifies safety requirements for button and coin batteries up to 32 mm in diameter to mitigate the risk of ingestion. It also defines the safety requirements for manufacturers and producers of button and coin batteries, including the consumer products that use them, and the retailers and distributors of these products.
Some requirements are only applicable for some battery categories. Requirements associated with a new CE conformity assessment of batteries are introduced in the Regulation. This means that all batteries, regardless of whether they are used in a product or supplied separately, need to be CE marked according to this regulation.
