Lead acid battery is filled with battery grade sulfuric acid The positive plates are already charged and negative plates are in a partially charged condition. On initial filling, strictly follow the procedure given by the battery manufacturer. Every type of battery will have a stipulated final specific gravity after charge.
To do this the battery is connected to a direct current charging device for several hours and charged to a nominal voltage. For a lead acid battery, the nominal voltage is 2 Volts per cell which is the mid-point between the fully charged and fully discharged state.
On initial filling, strictly follow the procedure given by the battery manufacturer. Every type of battery will have a stipulated final specific gravity after charge. Let us say this is 1.250. The battery manufacturer will be advising you to fill about 30 points less than this value for initial filling, say 1.210 or 1.200.
For the initial filling, use a specific gravity less by 30-35 points from the final designed specific gravity. In dry-charged batteries, as the name implies both positive and negative plates are already charged. Only a short boost charge is required before using as a flooded battery.
In addition to the classic lead-acid battery, which uses dilute sulfuric acid as the electrolyte, we can also offer filler plugs that use caustic (alkaline) as the electrolyte (NiCd, NiFe batteries). Our current filling plug is originally from the production of Rover & Rover GmbH.
The positive and negative posts are then welded to the relevant post lug and the complete battery pressure tested for leaks. It is then filled with an electrolyte solution typically made up of approximately 35% concentrated sulphuric acid (H2SO4) and 65% deionised water (H2O).
