What should a capacitor's voltage rating be?

Apart from nominal capacitance, the voltage rating is the second most important parameter that must be essentially factored in. The capacitor’s voltage rating should always be at least 1.5 times or twice the maximum voltage it may encounter in the circuit. Capacitors are not as reliable as resistors.

What are the stipulations for individual capacitor series?

The stipulations for individual capacitor series are in accordance with the CECC type specifications. The rated or operational pulse rise time is specified as 1/10 of the test pulse rise time. The pulse rise time F given in V/µsec is also indirectly the maximum current capacity.

Why do capacitors have different voltage ratings?

A capacitor with a 12V rating or higher would be used in this case. In another, 50 volts may be needed. A capacitor with a 50V rating or higher would be used. This is why capacitors come in different voltage ratings, so that they can supply circuits with different voltages, fitting the power (voltage) needs of the circuit.

Should a capacitor be rated 50 volts?

So if a capacitor is going to be exposed to 25 volts, to be on the safe side, it's best to use a 50 volt-rated capacitor. Also, note that the voltage rating of a capacitor is also referred to at times as the working voltage or maximum working voltage (of the capacitor).

How to choose a capacitor?

Remember that capacitors are storage devices. The main thing you need to know about capacitors is that they store X charge at X voltage; meaning, they hold a certain size charge (1µF, 100µF, 1000µF, etc.) at a certain voltage (10V, 25V, 50V, etc.). So when choosing a capacitor you just need to know what size charge you want and at which voltage.

What is a tolerance rating for a capacitor?

As with resistors, capacitors also have a Tolerance rating expressed as a plus-or-minus value either in picofarad’s (±pF) for low value capacitors generally less than 100pF or as a percentage (±%) for higher value capacitors generally higher than 100pF.
