Capacitors, like other electrical elements, can be connected to other elements either in series or in parallel. Sometimes it is useful to connect several capacitors in parallel in order to make a functional block such as the one in the figure. In such cases, it is important to know the equivalent capacitance of the parallel connection block.
Abstract: High-voltage (HV) capacitor banks are constructed using combinations of series and parallel capacitor units to meet the required voltage and kilovar requirements. These capacitor banks utilize protective relays, which will trip the bank when problems are detected.
In any case, capacitor banks can reach very high capacitance values. By using several supercapacitors connected in parallel, capacitances of several tens of kilofarads are feasible, especially bearing in mind that supercapacitors are capable of achieving capacitance values of over 2000 farads.
One example are DC supplies which sometimes use several parallel capacitors in order to better filter the output signal and eliminate the AC ripple. By using this approach, it is possible to use smaller capacitors that have superior ripple characteristics while obtaining higher capacitance values.
These capacitor banks utilize protective relays, which will trip the bank when problems are detected. Most commonly, these relays will be applied in some form of unbalance protection that relies on equivalent sections of the bank having nearly identical capacitances. In reality, equivalent bank sections rarely have identical capacitances.
A couple reasons come to mind. Lower ESR. The effective ESR of the capacitors follows the parallel resistor rule. For example, if one capacitor's ESR is 1 Ohm, putting ten in parallel makes the effective ESR of the capacitor bank ten times smaller. This is especially helpful if you expect a high ripple current on the capacitors. Cost saving.
