Conclusions Several large-scale lithium-ion energy storage battery fire incidents have involved explosions. The large explosion incidents, in which battery system enclosures are damaged, are due to the deflagration of accumulated flammable gases generated during cell thermal runaways within one or more modules.
Some of these batteries have experienced troubling fires and explosions. There have been two types of explosions; flammable gas explosions due to gases generated in battery thermal runaways, and electrical arc explosions leading to structural failure of battery electrical enclosures.
When it comes to lithium-ion battery fires, three main factors are responsible: excessive heat, puncture damage, and charging at too low a temperature. 1. Excessive Heat If a battery cell reaches a certain temperature, it can ignite, similar to any other energy source.
Another major cause of battery fires is puncture damage. When a battery cell is punctured, it leads to an internal short circuit between the cathode and anode, generating intense heat. This heat can cause the electrolyte to ignite, especially when exposed to the oxygen entering through the puncture.
The focus of the database is on lithium ion technologies, but other battery technology failure incidents are included. Failure incident: An occurrence caused by a BESS system or component failure which resulted in increased safety risk. For lithium ion BESS, this is typically a thermal risk such as fire or explosion.
The thermal runaway gas explosion hazard in BESS was systematically studied. To further grasp the failure process and explosion hazard of battery thermal runaway gas, numerical modeling and investigation were carried out based on a severe battery fire and explosion accident in a lithium-ion battery energy storage system (LIBESS) in China.
In recent years, there have been several fire and explosion accidents caused by thermal runaway of LIBs in battery energy storage system (BESS) worldwide [5]. We list some …
