Beyond the primary role of ensuring safety, safety capacitors are selected based on circuit requirements and function to safeguard the circuit from transient voltage spikes by diverting the excess energy to ground. In addition, safety capacitors filter electromagnetic interference (EMI).
An arc is produced across the contacts when a switch or a relay is opened. With time, this condition can wear down the contacts. To overcome this problem, an Resistor/Capacitor or RC circuit is deployed across the contacts and safeguard them. Once the contacts are open, the applied voltage goes through the capacitor and not the contacts.
These safety capacitors are also known by other names, including EMI/RFI suppression capacitors and AC line filter safety capacitors. (EMI stands for electromagnetic interference and RFI stands for radio-frequency interference; RFI is simply higher-frequency EMI.) Figure 1. An example of a Class-Y capacitor. Used as a filter as across the input to an ESC, the capacitor (s) acts to resist changes in voltage - both up and down. Inductors resist changes in current flowing through them. In other words they pass DC and block AC. Inductors used in traditional power supplies are used to block AC caused by changes in the input voltage.
EMI/RFI capacitors must comply with the safety and inflammability requirements of international safety standards, such as the following: A design consideration when using X capacitors is the need to automatically discharge the capacitor upon loss of power to the power converter to comply with safety standards.
In general, there are two classes of capacitors, Class-X and Class-Y, that are both used to minimize EMI in different applications. X Capacitors: Class-X capacitors, also known as "across-the-line capacitors,” are used between the wires carrying the incoming AC current.
