Capacitive sensors are used for the non-contact detection of any objects. In contrast to inductive sensors, which only detect metallic objects, capacitive sensors can also detect non-metallic materials. Typical applications are in the wood, paper, glass, plastic, food, chemical and semiconductor industries.
Capacitive sensors are based on the detection of change in capacity. With a plate-type capacitor, the capacity between two plates of constant size can be changed by altering their distance or by placing a dielectric in the measuring gap.
Due to their high signal stability and resolution, capacitive displacement sensors are applied in laboratories and industrial measurement tasks. In production control, for example, capacitive sensors measure film thickness and application of the adhesive. Installed in machines, they monitor displacement and tool positions.
A capacitive sensor switches as of a certain distance to a material being detected. This distance is referred to as the "operating distance." The operating distance is the most important characteristic of a capacitive sensor. The operating distance depends on the diameter of the sensor electrode.
The two factors can be taken into account accordingly. Capacitive sensors are often used to query machine parts. Such machine parts rarely have the same size and shape as the standard target to which the technical data of a sensor refers. The operating distance in particular depends on the size of the metal used to damp the sensor.
For most capacitive sensors, the sensitivity can be set within limits using a potentiometer at the sensor. The factory-set, default operating distance can thus still be adapted to the object material and the sensor installation situation. The standard target is defined as an "optimal actuator element" (~damping element) for operation.
