How does auto focus work?

The focuser is moved per the Auto Focus Step Size, exposures are taken per the Auto-Focus exposure time, and contrast is measured via different techniques. The curve obtained is close to a Gaussian Curve, where the maximum of the curve is the point of highest contrast and therefore best focus. An example would be as per the below.

Can I use the default autofocus exposure time if a filter wheel is connected?

The Default Auto Focus Exposure Time won't be used if a filter wheel is connected, and Auto Focus Exposure Times have been set up in the Filter wheel section of the Options -> Equipment view. Instead, the per-filter exposure times will be used depending on the filter set at the time.

Why is proper focusing important in astro-imaging?

Proper focusing is a critical part of astro-imaging. Poor focus will yield softer images and lower SNR. As such it is common for imagers to focus with precision tools such as a Bahtinov mask prior to imaging.

How do you get a good SC autofocus?

Be out of focus Negative when starting autofocus and then start the SC autofocus routine with the Positive button. I try to get close to focus then I hit the Negative button so it takes me back at least 200 steps. Even when I back it up 500 steps things work perfectly.
