Given the strategic nature of the battery industry and its economic significance, the emergence of a French industrial offer has been France’s top priority. In 2018, France launched the Plan Batteries, subsequently extended by France 2030, aimed at accelerating the development of a national battery industry.
Vincent said the factory in France is a response to multiple challenges including controlling the production chain, reducing the environmental impact of transporting batteries as it shortens shipping distances, and “helping to consolidate the European automotive industry in the face of global competition”.
In 2018, France launched the Plan Batteries, subsequently extended by France 2030, aimed at accelerating the development of a national battery industry. This ambitious strategy has enabled France to attract investment for six gigafactories: ACC, Envision, Verkor, Prologium, Tiamat and Blue Solutions.
Today, France’s efforts are focused on attracting projects covering the entire battery value chain in order to establish a comprehensive national offering. ACC, of which Stellantis, Mercedes-Benz and TotalEnergies are key stakeholders, have opened the first of three planned European gigafactories in France.
Blue Solutions is currently the only company to manufacture solid lithium-metal batteries on an industrial scale. Future new-generation solid batteries (GEN4) will offer 40% more autonomy than current lithium-ion batteries. R&D activities and an initial pilot line will be carried out in Brittany, with production due to start up in Alsace by 2030.
