The fundamental is very simple: Just to combined the number of LiFePo4 cells in series and parallel to make a bigger pack and finally to ensure safety by adding a BMS to it. This video tutorial shows the methodology and build of my 10Ah 4S1P lithium iron phosphate battery pack. This pack which is an update of last year's qrp battery pack, is based on Headway 38120 cells. It features internal battery management system, solar charge controller, and can be easily expanded for QRO power levels, or greater capacity.
Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries are charged in two stages: First, the current is kept constant, or with solar PV that generally means that we try and send as much current into the batteries as available from the sun. The Voltage will slowly rise during this time, until it reaches the ‘absorb’ Voltage, 14.6V in the graph above.

There are a couple of different reasons we want to use lithium iron phosphate batteries in the field. First of all they are incredibly lightweight. Secondly the usable energy versus their weight is much higher than that of traditional lead acid or AGM batteries.
