The purpose of this tutorial is to learn how to use your lab power supply to charge your Lithium Ion battery when you don’t have a special charger circuit to do so. He used NCR18650B in his tutorial, a 3.6V 3400mAh Lithium Ion battery from Panasonic.
According to the datasheet, the charging current is 1625mA and the charging voltage is 4.2V. Charging consists of two stages, first one is the constant current stage where you must supply a 1625mA constant current and when the battery voltage reaches 4.20V, the second stage starts, which is the constant voltage stage.
The most appropriate method for charging batteries among them is with a power supply that has constant current voltage drooping type characteristics (Far Left) where a constant current range is used for charging batteries with a constant current. The other two characteristics should not be used to charge batteries.
David Jones has another useful video tutorial about how to safely charge Lithium Ion and Lithium Polymer batteries with a bench power supply. The purpose of this tutorial is to learn how to use your lab power supply to charge your Lithium Ion battery when you don’t have a special charger circuit to do so.
However (quoting you): charging at a constant voltage (say 4.2V) so long as the maximum current is limited to a reasonable value for the cell means you will have constant current charger till your cell is at ~95%. Up to this point the voltage across the battery will be less than 4.2V if you measure it.
FYI, most secondary lithium chemistries only need a simple square load curve i.e. CC until CV. Once the battery reaches CV, current decays over time, naturally, through no action of the regulator (other than holding the voltage constant, as the name suggests). It reaches full charge when this current drops below the defined threshold.

If you find a regulator that voltage limits, you will probably not get a good charge out of it. A battery charger is a current-driven device, that attempts to drive a current into the …
Use a buck boost regulator - it would continue to produce 3.3 volts all the way down from probably over 5 volts to possibly 2.5 volts. Obviously you have to ensure that the Lithium battery doesn''t …
For effective battery charging, especially with lithium-ion and lead-acid batteries, the Constant Voltage/Constant Current (CVCC) method is recommended. This approach …
My settings for a car battery would be: 14.5Voc and 3Amax. It takes about 24hours to fully charge a 70Ah battery. If your supply does not do over-current gracefully (it overheats or blows fuses), then you have two …
The first is to measure the battery terminal voltage before connecting to the supply. Say it is 12.0V (mostly discharged). Set the supply to an open-circuit voltage of 12.0V, …

Another important thing to consider when using solar panels to charge lithium batteries is the voltage. Lithium batteries require a specific voltage range to charge properly, …
How to Recharge Batteries with a DC Power Supply. You can easily recharge batteries if you have a DC power supply. All that is needed to recharge battery cells is DC current. With DC current, electrons will flow back into the battery, …
